Dark Skies in Page, AZ
One of the most unique aspects to Page, AZ is it’s dark skies. Light pollution has become increasingly problematic because of its effect on the local ecology. Perhaps because of the scarcity of this resource, more and more people are participating in what is known as “astrotourism.” Tourists come to an area specifically to see dark skies. With its small population, Page still has one of the darkest skies in the United States; you can see the Milky Way on a clear night and can see stars that aren’t visible in even medium-sized cities. If you’re already in town for a slot canyon tour, why not stay the night? The national park service at Wahweap does lectures about the night sky at various times throughout the year, but even if your plans don’t coincide with these time slots you can still enjoy a view that the majority of the world will never see. Bring some head lamps and walk out to the Rim View Trail that surrounds the town and take some time to enjoy the solitude and beauty of stargazing.
There are currently 4 cities in Arizona that are certified International Dark Sky Communities. These are communities that are committed to reducing light pollution and the effects that bright skies have on the environment. This is a highly political and emotional decision, and it is one that Page is currently considering. Check out the article below to learn more about the debate.
